Indian duo ousts top seeds

Calcutta: The Indian pair of Marutha Devi and Vandana Murali upset top seeds Jennifer Debodt (Belgium) and Denise Harijanto (Indonesia) 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 in the first round of the girls’ doubles of the ITF championship Tuesday.

But top seeded Indo-Irish pair of Vikas Punna and Tristan Faroon Mahon beat the Uzbek team of Akmol Sharipov and Eduard Khan 7-6 (10-8), 6-3 in the first round of the boys’ doubles.

Second-seeded English pair of Nick Cavday and Max Jones moved into the second round beating Koren pair of Jong Ki-park and Min-joon 7-5, 6-2.

In the girls’ singles first round, top seeded Debodt lost to S. Punam Reddy of India 4-6, 6-4, 5-7. However, fourth seeded Indian Madura Ranganathan went down to Kate Polunina of Ukraine 6-7, 2-6.

Lucky loser Elena Volobueva moved into the second round beating Daniela Cohen of Israel 0-6, 7-6, 6-1.

Meanwhile, city girls Karina Ahuja and Shivika Burman also went down in straight sets.

While Ahuja was beaten by fifth seeded Krushmi Chedda 4-6, 2-6, Parekh was beaten by Shraddha Lodha 4-6, 3-6.
