Crackdown on school liquor ring

Behrampore, Jan. 13: Eleven persons were arrested last night in an inebriated condition from Kadai Home, a reformatory school run by the state social welfare department, for operating an illegal liquor racket inside the school complex.

Police said seven of them — all aged above 18 years — were inmates of the school hostel. Two were employees of the social welfare department and the rest were their “guests”.

“We received a complaint two days ago that some outsiders were regularly drinking inside the school. We were also informed that some of the school staff were involved in the merry-making and running a liquor racket. We alerted the vigilance department and conducted a raid,” said district magistrate Manoj Pant.

Voters’ list revised

Chief electoral officer Sabyasachi Sen today said 6.56 lakh new names have been added to the voters’ list in the state, taking the total number of voters to 4.65 crore.

“After the revision, we found that there has been an overall 1.43 per cent increase in the total number of voters. Individually, Jalpaiguri and Purulia districts have recorded a high 2 per cent increase,” he said.
