New vice-chief

New Delhi, Dec. 31: Lieutenant General Shantonu Choudhry took over as the vice-chief of army staff at army headquarters today, reports our special correspondent.

Lt Gen. Choudhry, 58, was commissioned in the Regiment of Artillery in September, 1963.

An alumnus of the National Defence Academy and Defence Services Staff College, Wellington, the General Officer has held a number of command, staff and instructor posts.

He has been Brigade Major of an infantry brigade in Punjab, General Staff Officer-I in an infantry division and the Colonel (General Services) of a division in a high altitude sector. He has also served as Director, Military Operations, at army headquarters, and as an instructor in the Defence Services Staff College, Wellington.

Having commanded a field regiment in the desert, he took over as commander of an artillery brigade in Jammu and Kashmir. He also commanded an infantry brigade as part of a strike corps before taking over as general officer commanding a counter-insurgency force in the Valley where he oversaw the conduct of parliamentary and Assembly elections in 1996. He has been additional director general of military intelligence at army headquarters and was awarded the Vishisht Seva medal and Ati Vishisht Seva medal.

He was general officer commanding the Vajra Corps. Before taking over as vice-chief, he was General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Army Training Command, Shimla.
