Sania Mirza makes history

New Delhi, Dec. 14 (PTI): Sania Mirza capped her fine form this year by becoming the first Indian girl to lift the Asian junior title at the DLTA Courts Saturday.

The 16-year old, who won two ITF titles and a bronze medal in the Busan Asian Games in the mixed doubles event in recent months, defeated a weary Ankita Bhambri 6-3, 7-5 in the final.

The menís crown went to second seed Tai Wei-liu from Korea who defeated compatriot Hyun Joon-suk 6-2, 6-3. For Liu, ranked as high as 41, the venue proved second time lucky after losing to Sunil Kumar Sipaeya last the tournamentís previous edition.

Liu, despite dropping serve in both the sets, needed just more than an hour to annex the title. Suk did his bit by spraying shots wide and long, and dropped serve easily twice in each sets.

Between Sania and Ankita, it was a case of survival of the fittest. While Sania looked fresh, Ankita was bogged down by tough matches over the week.
