Kumble confirms availability

Calcutta: Anil Kumble has confirmed his availability for the seven-match one-day series to be played in New Zealand. The leg-spinner had opted out of the two-match Test series starting in Wellington Thursday.

Kumble, who was here as the representative of his national teammates in Monday’s BCCI-ICC meeting over the contract dispute, said the ‘personal problems’ which forced him to skip the Tests are being sorted out.

India start the ODI series in New Zealand with a day-night match in Auckland on December 26. Jawagal Srinath, rested for the Tests, may also join the ODI squad.

Kumble played the first three matches in the recently-concluded seven-match series against the West Indies before being rested. His place had gone to Murali Kartik, who played the last four games.

Kumble said his teammates will be updated about Monday’s developments as soon as possible. Because of the time difference they could not be contacted Monday itself as the meeting got over well into the evening.

The Karnataka veteran said he was happy with the way things went in the meeting and appeared satisfied with the developments. For obvious reasons, however, he refused to go into details.

Kumble’s plans to take part in Tuesday’s South Zone one-dayer in Bangalore, however, were upset by the prolonged meeting which delayed his departure by a day. He was keen to leave for his hometown Monday evening, but had to push it back to Tuesday morning.
