Bengal name National Games soccer probables

Bengal on Friday named their list of 45 footballers in their squad of probables for the National Games scheduled from December 13 to 22. The players have been asked to report at the Mohammedan Sporting ground on Wednesday and the team will be selected the next day.

Meanwhile, Mohammedan Sporting coach Mohammed Habeeb has been named the Bengal coach for the National Games. He was in charge of the IFA XI during their tour of South Africa in June.

Varsity meet

The East Zone inter-university football tournament will begin at the Kalyani University ground Tuesday. Thirty-nine universities, nine from Bengal, will take part in the ten-day meet.

Bangla team

A team from Bangladesh will take part in the all India SAI football tournament starting Tuesday. Eight teams will be in fray in the six-day meet scheduled to take place at the SAI Eastern Centre.

Xaverians win

St Xaviers’ Collegiate School and Cartouche School moved into the final of the sixth inter-school tennis tournament being held at the SAI eastern centre. While the Cartouche boys outclassed Calcutta Boys 2-1, St Xavier’s beat La Martiniere by a similar margin.

CU in semis

Calcutta University, Jadavpur University, IIT Kharagpur and North Bengal University moved into the semi-finals of the Ajoy Ghosh memorial inter-university cricket tournament.

In the quarter finals played on Friday, IIT Kharagpur beat Biswabharati by 28 runs while North Bengal edged out Burdwan University by two wickets.

Musah arrival

Nigerian defender Isa Musah will arrive Tuesday to play for Mohun Bagan in the NFL. The defender, who played for Mahindra United last season will be Bagan’s fourth foreigner for the League.

The club authorities also informed that they are trying to bring in Ajayan from SBT and Rishi Kapoor on lien. Kapoor played for Bagan last season.

Meanwhile, Dr Vece Paes, who was treating Bhaichung Bhutia has advised rest for him.
