Calcutta, Nov. 2: Two persons were kidnapped from the city during the last 24 hours, while one of them was rescued today, police said.
Sumanta Bardhan, the son of a tea trader, was kidnapped yesterday. His family members, who received ransom calls demanding Rs 12 lakh, informed the police. But raids at different places proved futile.
According to his family members, Bardhan, a resident of Pasupatinath Road in the Behala police station area, left his house last morning as usual. But when he did not return home even after midnight, they informed the police.
The next day, the Bardhan family received four telephone calls demanding the ransom. Alarmed by the repeated phone calls, his family members once again contacted the police who conducted raids at different places but could not trace him.
In the other incident, Sanjeev Sabbu, who was also abducted last morning, was rescued by the police after they traced the ransom calls.
Sabbu had been kidnapped on his way to the office at Marshal House. This morning, his friends received a call on their cellphones demanding a ransom of Rs 4 lakh. Based on the numbers the police launched a search and traced him.
