Pattanaik next chief justice

New Delhi, Oct. 18: Justice Gopal Ballav Pattanaik of the Supreme Court will be the next Chief Justice of India.

President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam appointed Pattanaik to take charge from November 8 and issued the warrants of appointment under clause (2) of Article 124 of the Constitution late last night. Pattanaik will succeed Justice B.N. Kirpal.

Pattanaik, a B.Sc. LL.B. from Orissa, was born on December 19, 1937, and enrolled as an advocate on February 28, 1962. He practised in civil, criminal, constitutional and company branches of law in Orissa High Court and also appeared in the Supreme Court.

Pattanaik also worked as government advocate for more than four years.

On June 1, 1983, Pattanaik was appointed a judge in Orissa High Court. He became chief justice of Patna High Court on May 19, 1995, and was elevated to the Supreme Court on September 11, 1995.

Pattanaik’s tenure will end on December 19, when he retires.
