Nagaon, Oct. 5 (PTI): Calcutta giants East Bengal annexed their first trophy of the season, beating OIL India 2-0 in the Independence Cup final on Saturday.
Alvito D’Cunha gave the red-gold brigade a 42nd-minute lead and eight minutes from time substitute Chandan Das clinched the issue by converting a penalty.
East Bengal took the lead when D’Cunha received a right-wing pass from Kaustav Ghosh and shot home. The second goal came of a combined effort, which culminated in gaining a spot-kick, which Chandan converted.
Orissa eves in final
In Diphu, Orissa moved into the final of the national women’s U-19 football meet on Saturday, beating hosts Assam 4-1.
Orissa’s goals cam via captain Sudipta Das in the 49th and 58th minutes, Thungki Mundain the 51st and Lakshimpriya Sahu in the 69th. For the hosts, Minakshi Borgoyari scored in the 66th.
Manipur take on Haryana in the second semi-final on Sunday.
