Calcutta, Sept. 17: A consortium of five Japanese companies would construct an expressway from Calcutta to Haldia, chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee said today.
The funds for the project that includes a bridge over a 2.7 km stretch of the Hooghly at Kukrahati would be supplied by Japanís ministry of international trade and industry.
A seven-member team from the consortium, which includes Marubeni Corporation, met Bhattacharjee today. The process of drawing up a project report has begun. The report will be submitted by January.
To draw up the technical feasibility report, the consortium has sough the assistance of the PWD. The department will provide basic data like the number of vehicles plying between Calcutta and Raichak and the projected vehicular population once the expressway is ready.
