An eternal quote indeed. You wake up with media, and, sleep with it, particular in the present digital age where information is available at the literal fingertips.

  • The Government of India has increased the FDI limit from 74% to 100%. In November 2021, the govt. further announced that it is working towards creating a National Centre of Excellence for AVGC (animation, visual effects, gaming and comics).
  • FDI inflows in the information and broadcasting sector (including print media) stood at US$ 9.85 billion between April 2000-September 2022.
  • According to a FICCI-EY report, within the M&E sector, TV is expected to remain the largest segment and likely to post a CAGR of 7% to Rs. 847 billion (US$ 12.01 billion) by 2023. The advertising-based video on demand (AVoD) segment is expected to rise at a CAGR of 24% to reach US$ 2.6 billion by 2025.
  • The rapid growth of OTT channels has also increased emphasis on animated intellectual property (IP) content and larger investments in VFX by studios, providing opportunities in the sector, in both domestic and international markets.

Truth is stranger than fiction, they say!

And to cater to the huge demand in the above mentioned diversified domains, the media industry needs skilled man power.

Yes, you need to prepare from the beginning to be a part of this bandwagon. Right from when you are a student of class 11 – 12, the preparations must start. Emphasising on writing and speaking skills is primary. Creative thinking, communication skills, interviewing, networking, research and problem solving skills, critical analysis, clear delivery of thoughts and expressions, self confidence, ability to work under rigorous deadlines and above all good presentation skills are the other must-have skills.

Numerous colleges under both government and private universities do offer undergraduate courses which cater to students wanting to build a career in the media industry. These courses are usually called BA in Journalism and Mass Communication, B.A in Media Studies, B.Sc in Media Science, B.A – Mass Communication etc. However, before taking admission in any such course, it is always advisable to authenticate that the college is affiliated to a UGC recognised university.

To be eligible for these courses you must have passed your class 12 or comparative exam with a minimum of 50% in any stream. Additional eligibility will vary from course to course.

Many colleges also conduct entrance examinations during admission.
