Two arrested with narcotics worth Rs 2 crore in Siliguri

According to police sources, the duo was apprehended with the brown sugar near the third Mahananda Bridge

Two persons were arrested after narcotics worth around Rs 2 crore was seized from them here on Monday.

According to police sources, Md. Yakub Khan of Malda district and Kajal Sha, a resident of Biswas Colony located in Matigara on the outskirts of Siliguri, were apprehended with the brown sugar near the third Mahananda Bridge. Brown sugar is a derivative of heroin.

“The duo were carrying the narcotics in a black polythene bag. Charges under the NDPS Act have been brought against them. The estimated cost of the seized narcotic is around Rs 1.96 crore,” said a police officer.

In a separate incident, Bhaktinagar police arrested Rana Majumdar, a resident of Vidyachakra Colony from Dashrath Pally area of the city, after sixty-two vials of contraband medicine were recovered from him on Monday.

In another incident, troops of 195 battalion of the Border Security Force (BSF) posted at Chaulhati border outpost in Jalpaiguri district apprehended a suspected Bangladeshi smuggler on Monday.

Ijanul Mohammad, a resident of Panchagarh district of the neighbouring country, was nabbed while he was illegally trying to cross the border with some cattle from India to Bangladesh.

Later, he was handed over to the police.

The BSF also carried out anti-smuggling drives on Monday night across north Bengal and seized items around Rs 2.57 lakh, sources said.
