Three people were killed when a truck collided with a motorcycle at the junction of NH16 and NH60 at Rupnarayanpur in West Midnapore on Tuesday morning.

Eyewitnesses said fish traders and Midnapore residents Hiru Gain, Meherjan Bibi and an unidentified man were travelling on a motorcycle, without helmets, bound for the Golbazar fish market in Kharagpur, when the accident occurred around 6.30am.

Gain and Meherjan were residents of the Rajarbagan area in Midnapore.

Police sent the bodies to Kharagpur sub-divisional hospital for autopsy. “The trio’s motorcycle was rammed into from behind by a speeding truck. It did not seem to be their mistake, though no one was wearing a helmet,” said an eyewitness.

The truck driver is yet to be traced. “A police investigation is underway,” said subdivisional police officer (Kharagpur), Dipak Sarkar.
