Trinamool leader’s associate arrested in connection with attack on BJP workers after poll defeat

Jalpaiguri police arrested Chiranjit Pandit, a close associate of Trinamool Congress leader Krishna Das, on Friday.

Das, the district president of Trinamool’s SC and OBC cell, had contested on the party’s ticket from the Jalpaiguri Assembly Constituency in the recently held polls.

After he lost to the BJP candidate, Ananta Deb Adhikary, Das and his associates organised an attack on some BJP supporters on the outskirts of Jalpaiguri.

A complaint was filed against him and 36 others, and he went into hiding as the police started searching for him.

The police have arrested eight people, including Pandit, in connection with the case so far. Officers said that Pandit might provide details about Krishna’s whereabouts and could help them trace him.

Body found

The body of an unidentified youth was found in the bushes along the Mahananda riverbed at Naukaghat in ward 31 of Siliguri on Friday morning.

Some residents spotted the body lying amid dense vegetation and informed police. A team from the New Jalpaiguri police station recovered the body and sent it to North Bengal Medical College & Hospital for post-mortem.

Police have registered a case and initiated a probe.
