Supporters of two factions of the Trinamul Congress clashed at Salmara village in Nazirhat in the Dinhata subdivision in the past two days.

On Friday, members of one group led by Tarini Kanta Sarkar, who is close to Mir Humayan Kabir, the former block president of Dinhata, intercepted two youths at Panchmatha More.

The duo are believed to be the followers of Tarini Kanta Sarkar who recently joined Trinamul and is close to Dinhata MP Udayan Guha.

Sources said groups headed by “old” Tarini and “new” Tarini had been attacking each other to keep control over Salmara and the adjoining areas for the past few days.

The “old” Tarini’s supporters allegedly seized crude bombs, bows and arrows from the two and even fastened them with ropes at Panchmatha More. The two were arrested by police.

Trinamul insiders said “old” Tarini also enjoyed the support of Bishnupada Burman, the district president of Trinamul Youth Congress in Cooch Behar.

“The other Tarani Kanta Burman was with Forward Bloc and joined Trinamul recently. He is bringing in people from outside and they are armed with bows and arrows and even carrying bombs to organise attacks on us,” said a member of “old” Tarini.
