A leader of the Trinamul Congress’s minority wing in Nadia district was killed by six unidentified persons at a market in Murshidabad’s Nawada on Thursday evening.

Motirul Sheikh, 43, was the husband of Mira Biswas, the chief of Narayapur 1 gram panchayat in Nadia district.

Police and local sources said assailants hurled bombs at Sheikh at Sibnagar-Tiyakata village near the Jalangi river when he was headed for home to Hyatapara near Karimpur on his motorcycle, his son seated pillion.

As Sheikh fell, they attacked him with a sharp-edged weapon. His son, who is a minor, escaped unhurt.

Doctors at Murshidabad Medical College Hospital declared him brought dead.

Murshidabad police chief Surinder Singh said a murder case had begun.
