Sarkar, who hails from Dangapara village of East Burdwan’s Nadanghat, went on a rape-and-murder spree since 2016. Police said as part of his modus operandi, Sarkar used to enter homes of lonely women in the guise of an electricity employee for a meter reading. He would then attack the women with an iron chain or rod and rape her. In most cases the woman died.

Police sources said Sarkar killed at least 10 women and raped at least a dozen. He was arrested in June last year.

Soumyajit Raha, the special public prosecutor who came to Kalna from Calcutta to represent the state government, said Sarkar had many cases under Pocso too.
