The Enforcement Directorate (ED) teams conducted search and seizure operations at multiple addresses, including the Fern Road house of Biswajit Poddar, the alleged mastermind behind a violent clash and firing in Kankulia, an area near Golpark, on February 1.

ED officials are tight-lipped about the day’s operation.

Sources in the central agency, however, said it was linked to an alleged land-grab case.

Several influential businessmen allegedly collected money by promising high returns to investors from real-estate projects on illegally procured land parcels.

Sources said the ED was probing the flow of funds as part of its investigation.

“Biswajit Poddar alias Sona Pappu was allegedly in touch with a few businessmen who are believed to have illegally acquired land parcels and later sold them at high prices by fabricating documents,” an ED official said.

“We can’t go into the details, but the focus is to find the money trail.”

Poddar was allegedly close to some Trinamool Congress leaders.

One of his aides, Babu Sona, was allegedly spotted during a recent Trinamool election campaign in Kasba.

“Until a court convicts Poddar, he shouldn’t be termed a criminal,” said minister Javed Khan, the Trinamool candidate from Kasba.

Since the firing and the clash at Kankulia, the police have filed three cases. While 10 persons have been arrested for their alleged involvement in the violence, Poddar is absconding.

ED teams visited was the office of a company on Ashwini Dutta Road in Ballygunge to probe allegations of financial fraud.

It was not clear whether Poddar has any connection with this company.

The search and seizure operations on Wednesday came two days after the ED questioned Debasish Kumar, the Trinamool candidate for Rashbehari, in connection with the probe into the alleged land-grab case.
