Sixty-year-old villager Nilkanta Oraon in Rajganj block, Jalpaiguri, was killed by a wild elephant early on Saturday.

Sources said the elephant strayed into the village on the fringes of Baikunthapur forest. While searching for fodder, it entered Oraon’s house of Dewniapara village and trampled him to death while he was sleeping in a room. The animal then left the village.

Foresters recovered the body. Oraon’s family will get cash compensation of Rs 4 lakh and one family member a job from the state government, forest officials said.

Siliguri station fire

A fire broke out at the Siliguri Junction on Saturday morning.

People saw smoke and flames in the passengers’ retiring room of the station.

Government railway police and railway protection force teams used fire extinguishers to douse the fire. After some time, a fire engine reached the spot.

Firemen said the blaze had been controlled in time. The cause of the blaze is yet to be ascertained.
