Chief minister Mamata Banerjee virtually inaugurated the Devi Choudhurani temple at Shikarpur in Jalpaiguri district on Sunday from Siliguri.

Jalpaiguri DM Moumita Godara Basu said that on March 30, idols of Devi Choudhurani, Bhawani Pathak and some others, which have been readied at a workshop in Jalpaiguri, will be installed and venerated at the temple.

A private agency was assigned with the task.

The temple is considered significant as the characters penned by author Bankim Chandra Chatterjee in his novel Devi Choudhurani published back in 1884 are worshipped here.

Biswajit Ghosh, a sculptor associated with the project, said they had readied 10 idols, which include those of Devi Choudhurani and Bhawani Pathak.

The temple is ready at the site in Shikarpur.
