A Trinamul leader was injured by an arrow and a couple of other supporters were assaulted by a group of goons who barged into an office of the party in Bhetaguri on the outskirts of Cooch Behar town late on Tuesday.
Police initiated a probe and arrested six persons. Trinamul has accused the BJP of orchestrating the attack.
Sources said Ananta Barman, the president of Bhetaguri-I panchayat committee, was seated at the party office with some supporters on Tuesday when around 8.30pm, some persons armed with bows, arrows and sharp weapons allegedly attacked them.
“Some BJP-backed goons attacked us. They shot an arrow which pierced my abdomen,” said Ananta.
The attackers also beat up two other Trinamul supporters. When the injured raised an alert, the goons fled the spot.
Barman was rushed to Dinhata sub-divisional hospital and later shifted to a private nursing home. He is reportedly stable now and the arrow has been taken out, said doctors.
Abhijit Dey Bhowmik, the district Trinamul president, reached the spot and spoke with the aggrieved supporters to bring the situation under control.
A police team also went to the spot and initiated a probe. So far, six persons have been arrested in connection with the case.
Sumit Kumar, the superintendent of police, visited the spot on Wednesday.
Trinamul also took out a protest march in Bhetaguri on Wednesday, demanding arrests of all those involved in the attack. Sumit Kumar, the superintendent of police, also visited the spot.
BJP leaders, however, have denied Trinamul’s charges. “We have no connection with the incident. It was a fallout of an internal rivalry among different lobbies of Trinamul,” said Ajay Roy, a BJP leader.
