On Thursday, Khagen Murmu, the BJP candidate of Malda North, demonstrated in front of the local police station, demanding steps against accused Trinamul supporters "within 24 hours".

He alleged that on Tuesday, Trinamul supporters led by party leader Pujan Das attacked BJP leader Kamal Thokdar in Harishchandrapur's Pipla village.

“The attackers ransacked Kamal's house and beat him. His family members were thrashed. Some BJP supporters who tried to resist were attacked with swords,” Murmu alleged.

Trinamul leaders blamed Murmu, also the sitting MP, for the attacks. “At the MP's instigation, BJP-backed goons are intimidating our people. They attacked Pujan Das and damaged his two-wheeler. He is hospitalised. The police should immediately stop this BJP violence,” Ziaur Rehman, a local Trinamul leader said.

Cops said a probe was on.
