The overall economic outlook remains tumultuous, to say the least. With the situation constantly evolving and the persistent shortage of memory and AI RAM, finding a nimble handset requires a time-tested performer. The OnePlus Nord series fits the bill perfectly, and the latest iteration, the Nord 6, presents a rather compelling value proposition.

Aesthetic refinement and durability

The device adopts the design language of OnePlus’s flagship stable, sporting a squircle camera module that ensures a clean and sophisticated appearance. It feels significantly more premium than its predecessors, and more importantly, it sits much flatter with less wobble when placed on a table.

While the Nord 6 is a touch thicker and heavier than the Nord 5, this is a fair trade-off for the significantly larger power cell. We are looking at a 9,000mAh battery compared to the 6,800mAh found on the previous model. Furthermore, the handset boasts an improved ingress protection rating covering IP66, IP68, IP69, and IP69K. This matches the standards found on the more expensive OnePlus 15 and 15R, providing peace of mind when caught out on a rainy day. The inclusion of MIL-STD-810H military-grade protection and Crystal Guard for the display further cements its robust credentials.

Despite these changes, the in-hand feel remains familiar, though the rounded edges make it slightly more comfortable to hold. All the usual suspects are present and correct, including a noise-cancelling microphone, an IR blaster, and a USB Type-C 2.0 port.

Performance and battery longevity

The 6.78-inch 1.5K AMOLED display truly punches above its weight. It features a 165Hz refresh rate and a peak brightness that can reach a staggering 3,600 nits. While the ultra-high refresh rate is difficult to discern during a casual scroll through social media, it makes a world of difference during a proper gaming session. The speakers have also been given a bit of “welly,” sounding louder and clearer than most rivals. For those who prefer high-quality wired audio, there is full support for LDAC and LHDC.

Under the bonnet, performance has seen a substantial leg-up with the Snapdragon 8s Gen 4 chipset, paired with LPDDR5X RAM and 256GB of UFS 4.1 storage. Benchmarks confirm that the Nord 6 outpaces its predecessor in both raw power and storage speeds, with improved CPU stability indicating that the Nord line is now seriously targeting the performance-orientated user. Given its prowess in the gaming department, one might think twice before splashing out on a more expensive flagship. Thermal management is also top-notch, keeping the device cool under pressure.

One of the real triumphs here is the 9,000mAh SiCarbon battery. While the Nord 5 was already a marathon runner, Nord 6 users can comfortably expect two full days of use. With roughly 10 to 12 hours of screen-on time, the need to carry a charger is virtually eliminated. There is even 27W reverse wired charging, allowing you to top up other gadgets in a pinch. One might wonder why the likes of Samsung or Apple haven’t adopted similar battery tech, but given their massive shipping volumes, they tend to be more cautious with long-term testing before making such a leap.

The camera setup features a 50MP Sony LYTIA-600 main sensor and an 8MP ultra-wide snapper. Detail captured by the primary lens is far superior to the Nord 5 or the Nothing Phone (4a), particularly in low light where images remain sharp. While the processing is a bit punchy, it remains social-media ready without looking outrageous. Skin tones appear natural, and the ultra-wide algorithm has seen a decent improvement. Video is capped at 4K@60fps with modest stabilisation.

On the software front, users are promised four generations of Android OS upgrades and six years of security patches. While Oxygen OS is buttery smooth, some may still prefer the aesthetic of Samsung’s One UI. The included AI features are functional if not revolutionary, but then again, one wonders if AI has truly captivated the average user yet.

In the pricing department, the phone is slightly expensive but it’s the same case across the board. The definition of affordable mid-range phones is quickly changing, given the shortage of memory chips.

Ultimately, the OnePlus Nord 6 is about refining hardware rather than reinventing the wheel, offering exceptional value through its stellar chipset and class-leading battery life. Full marks indeed.
