What could be a better subject for a new summer release than a murder mystery story set in the hills? Set in the lush mountainous terrain of Darjeeling, the upcoming hoichoi series Kuheli explores the aftermath of a mysterious death of a top-ranking police officer of a town in the hills. The trailer suggests a tense, character-driven dramatic narrative that seeks to blur the lines between victimhood, guilt, innnocence and grief.
The story revolves around the suspicious death of officer SP Rana Singha (Koushik Sen) of a police station near Darjeeling. Priyanka Sarkar, who stars in the role of a cop investigating the death, reveals it to be a cold-blooded murder committed by someone the victim was familiar with, a news that leaves the small hilly town in shock.
The plot thickens after the shadow of suspicion falls on the victim’s widow’s sisters, played by Angana Roy and Ridhima Ghosh. The trailer implies that every character in the story can be a potential victim or killer, indicating that each one has secrets to tell or to hide. Susmita Dey portrays the role of the widowed wife of the dead police officer. The relationship among the three sisters is one of the most intriguing aspects of this murder mystery, with its strong focus on intense, strained emotions, a dark past and lingering secrets.
Though it includes snatches of what appear to be happy, comic and light-hearted moments, the trailer indicates a heavy, dark and forbidding mood to the narrative with a strong psychological tension surrounding the probability of the emergence of truth from the fog of deceptions. Lies, treachery, veiled threats and intimidations are implicit in almost every scene and dialogue, offering clear hints that the relationship among the three sisters is complicated. What compounds the mystery and adds complexity to Rana’s death, is the suggestion that he was a corrupt, perhaps even immoral person, whose relationship with his sisters-in-law was far from agreeable.
“Agni walks into a town where everyone is grieving and everyone is lying. Her job is to tell the two apart. Every face tells a different story, and every silence feels deliberate. As an outsider and an investigator, she must cut through layers of deception, instinctively separating truth from carefully constructed lies — because in this town, nothing is as it seems, and trusting the wrong person could cost everything,” said Priyanka Sarkar, who plays DSP Agni Basu in the series.
An unsettling atmosphere of suspicion, mistrust, fear and anxiety in the trailer is amplified by a landscape shrouded in mist and mystery. The title of the series, which means fog, emphasises the claustrophobic mood of Kuheli, whose atmospheric visuals combined with a thrilling, suspenseful background score, give an impression of being trapped in a web of lies, secrets and paranoia. Directed by Aditi Roy and also starring Subhrajit Dutta, Durbar Sharma and others, Kuheli premieres on hoichoi on May 15.
“Kuheli is a slow-burn narrative that moves between quirkiness and suspense, unfolding as a two-way journey where every character is both a victim and a potential killer. The storyline, along with the intriguing world built around its characters, gives each of them a motive for murder, elevating it from a mere mystery to a story of profound reckoning,” said Aditi Roy.
