Super Mario World. The world was not supposed to know it, but Universal has accidentally included the title of the next Mario film in a press statement about upcoming titles and soon after removed the name.
The Super Mario Bros Movie was a smash hit in 2023 to the point of becoming the highest-grossing video game film adaptation and the first ever film based on a video game to bring in over $1 billion at the box office. The story ended on a note worthy of a sequel. And that too was soon confirmed by Nintendo and Universal.
Nintendo and Universal revealed in a Mario Day stream in 2024 that the next film would be released on April 3, 2026, in the US and in most countries globally.
If the title remains, the name could be a celebration of the fourth mainline Super Mario Bros game, also called Super Mario World, which was released for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1990 in Japan and 1991 in the US. It is one of the best video games ever.
The first film’s post-credit scene teased the arrival of Mario’s green dinosaur steed / friend Yoshi, who made his videogame debut in Super Mario World. The game sold more than 20 million copies.
Directors Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic will return to lead the production. Nintendo is ramping up its entertainment efforts; a live-action Legend of Zelda movie is in the works, set to release in March 2027.
