The buzz around Kaushik Ganguly’s much-anticipated film Dhumketu has witnessed a steady rise following the unveiling of its teaser in June. Starring Dev and Subhashree Ganguly, the teaser had also indicated a strong romantic angle to the story, with the promise of a few love songs to add to the flavour of their relationship.

Gaane gaane, the first song from the soundtrack of the film, has predictably generated ripples of excitement among Bengali movie and music-loving netizens, who have been eagerly waiting to hear Dhumketu music director Anupam Roy’s creations for this film. Currently trending on YouTube, the song is a typically old-fashioned romantic number that evokes the nostalgia and sweet simplicity of romantic relationships of an earlier era.

The lyrics of the song are structured in the form of a musical conversation between the lovers played by Dev and Subhashree. The opening visuals of the song show what appears to be an argument between the two young lovers.

As Subhashree’s character Rupa walks off in a huff, Dev’s character follows her and breaks into song in an attempt to pacify her. During their light-hearted romantic squabble, each one responds to the other’s accusation as they walk along deserted hilly roads and wooded areas. Dev’s character grumbles that Rupa does not pay any attention to his affections and clearly appeals to her to reciprocate his feelings. Coy and pretending to protest his entreaties of love in the beginning, Rupa finally yields to his wishes just as he is about to turn away glum-faced, ready to give up all hopes of winning her over.

Set against the backdrop of a bright, sunny and picturesque hillside, the pristine beauty of the surroundings enhances the sweet melody of the track. Written and composed by Anupam Roy, the duet sung by Arijit Singh and Shreya Ghoshal has a lively, youthful quality which resonates with the energy of the natural environment. Arijit Singh’s trademark husky tone perfectly matches with Dev’s character and mood in the sequence and elevates the song to the next level, while Shreya’s golden voice beautifully echoes the feelings of Subashree’s character in Gaane gaane.

Both Dev and Subhashree look very young, fresh and innocent in the song, perhaps indicating that this song sequence takes place in a period in their lives when they were much younger. With its teaser also having revealed Dev in an aged, haggard look, the song arouses curiosity in the minds of viewers about the circumstances that led to such a drastic change in his appearance.

A lovely, entertaining romantic number, Gaane gaane, powered by Arijit Singh and Shreya Ghoshal’s voices, is beautifully balanced with the delightful and endearing charm of Anupam Roy’s music and lyrics. It instantly appeals to the heart and will surely add a completely different dimension to the whole experience of Dhumketu’s action-packed story and performances. Dhumketu releases in theatres on August 14.
