Devi, a suspense-driven crime thriller directed by Anirban Chakraborty, explores themes of revenge and justice through an investigative narrative. The KLIKK series revolves around the mysterious disappearance of Sneha, an ambitious aspiring actress. When the official police investigation reaches a dead end, a determined yet often underestimated female constable named Devi launches her own parallel investigation.
As Devi uncovers hidden clues, she finds herself entangled in a disturbing web connecting a spiritual leader and Chhanda Masi — a grief-stricken mother. The deeper Devi digs, the more she realises that manipulation and secrets are dangerously intertwined. The series features an ensemble cast including Avery Singha Roy in the titular role, Arindam Ganguly, Amlan Majumder, Sagarika Roy, Debipriya Sarkar, and Kaushik Sil. Amlan Majumder has written the story, screenplay, and dialogue.
Director Anirban Chakraborty described Devi as a departure into the crime thriller genre after working across multiple storytelling styles. “Murder mysteries have always been my favourite,” Chakraborty said. “In this story, the protagonist is Devi, a passionate female constable who also has to deal with challenges and bias from her colleagues.” He further revealed that nearly 80 per cent of the shooting took place outdoors in Nadia district.
“The beautiful natural surroundings truly added great value to the project, though the weather conditions were truly challenging. As far as casting is concerned, my first experience working with Arindam Ganguly and Avery has been excellent. In fact, the moment I heard about the characters, these two were the first people who came to my mind. Cinema is all about entertainment. The audience will be both entertained and thrilled while watching this series. It also carries a strong message that sin spares no one. There were myriad interesting experiences during the shooting process,” he added.
Intriguing shades and characters
Writer and actor Amlan Majumder, who also plays the character Sumanta in the series, said the narrative was inspired by real issues that exist beneath the surface of society. “The very name ‘Devi’ carries within it a divine power and the symbolic indication of the destruction of evil,” he said. “However, the Devi in my story is a very ordinary woman of flesh and blood, who too seeks to diminish evil doing.” Majumder added that the serene rural settings of Nadia and Calcutta became an emotional and visual strength of the series.
Avery Singha Roy described the role as emotionally layered and empowering. “The name ‘Devi’ carries strength within it,” she said. “Yet, despite all the pressures and conflicts, women rise in their lives to truly become a ‘Devi.’ My character is exactly like that.” Avery shared that the shoot in Naihati and Badkulla was filled with memorable moments despite rain interruptions and technical challenges. Recalling the warmth of local residents, she said, “One of the didis brought us muri makha and tea. At around 10pm, all of us sat together having tea and muri — these small, joyful moments are truly unforgettable.”
Speaking about the larger message of the show, she added, “Opposing the misuse of faith for selfish purposes is the duty of any civilised person.” Arindam Ganguly, who portrays a godman in the series, revealed that villagers at the shooting location genuinely mistook him for a spiritual leader and offered him prayers during filming.
A Blend of Suspense and Social Commentary
Actress Debipriya Sarkar, known to television audiences through Kanyadaan, makes her OTT debut with Devi. “This story is not just about a single character — it is a tale of feminine power and triumph, woven with mystery, thrill, and shadows of the unknown.”
With its atmospheric rural backdrop, layered characters, and themes of exploitation and women’s resilience, Devi promises a thrilling and thought-provoking ride.
