Team Detective Charulata recently got together for the premiere of the series at SRFTI. Surangana Bandyopadhyay plays Charulata Mitra in the KLIKK series Detective Charulata. Directed by Joydip Banerjee, the series also stars Chaiti Ghoshal, Mallika Mazumder, Debmalya Gupta, Anujoy Chattopadhyay, Pamela Kanjilal and more. Private detective Charulata Mitra, along with her cousin Topu, is known for handling mundane cases but Charu believes her talent could be put to much better use. This opportunity is soon provided by Maddy, Charu’s new recruit. A case takes Charu and Topu on a trail of mysterious deaths, eventually going back to a fateful incident three decades back, which connected it all.
“A lot of our colleagues, family and our friends from the industry were there cheering for us. So it was a beautiful experience and it feels absolutely incredible to be able to explore any new genre and not just a thriller, while working. It’s definitely a new genre for me, as I played the role of a detective for the first time in my life. So that has been a very rewarding experience and this was my first time working with KLIKK and everything went smoothly. We have taken baby steps for a female detective to come to the mainstream. I sincerely wish that there is a season two to Detective Charulata. It was really empowering playing the part of a character who is so confident, so sure of herself and so sure of her intellect,” said Surangana.

“The premiere was a packed house. As a director, I’m always trying to explore new genres. And my first attempt at detective thrillers feels very satisfying. The upbeat buzz was great at the premiere, from contemporary directors, film fraternity friends and acquaintances alike. Not just for the story or plot devices, the audience has also loved and empathised with Charulata. Also, Anujoy Chattopadhyay as Inspector Laskar and the BGM by Pranjal Das are getting a lot of special mentions. I strongly feel that Detective Charulata will be able to break certain stereotypes. It’s high time that we venture outside the norms of detective fiction,” said director Joydip Banerjee.

“The audience’s feedback shows how much they’ve enjoyed it. A new detective in the city. A female detective. We’ve seen female detectives in literature before, but not so much in audio-visual media. And this detective doesn’t just solve mysteries. Her home life, her family are also shown with warmth. And most importantly, it’s a Bengali family,” said Anujoy Chattopadhyay.
