Is Samsung’s next foldable smartphone getting a new dimension? If industry insider Sonny Dickson is to be believed, the upcoming Galaxy foldable lineup will include a ‘Z Fold 8 Wide’ — a passport-shaped device that appears designed to take on Huawei’s Pura X Max.

Dickson has shared images on social media of dummy units and design prototypes of what appears to be the next Galaxy Z Fold series. The leaked units suggest that Samsung’s wide foldable will feature a dual-camera setup on the rear, down from three cameras on its other Z Fold phones. The dummies also show prominent rings that point to Qi2 wireless charging support — which would be a first for Samsung.

Last year, Samsung made substantial changes to the feel of its foldable phones, to the point where the range has become the go-to choice in the category for customers outside China. A ‘Z Fold 8 Wide’ would push that momentum further. The inner display is expected to carry a 4:3 aspect ratio, making the phone easier to hold and considerably more comfortable for reading e-books.

It could turn out to be an important year for foldable phones more broadly. According to Bloomberg, Apple’s first foldable is on track to arrive during the company’s usual iPhone launch window later this year — provided there are no supply chain disruptions owing to the ongoing US-Iran conflict. The device is said to be step two of a three-year plan to reinvent the look and feel of Apple’s flagship iPhone. Last year, the company overhauled its Pro and Pro Max models and introduced a slimmer option called the iPhone Air. A separate iPhone revamp is also in the works for 2027, timed to mark the product’s twentieth anniversary.

With both Samsung and Apple pushing the boundaries of what a foldable can be, the category is shaping up to have a very interesting year indeed.
