Cinema isn’t dying, but let’s be honest — it’s not quite the packed house it once was. More people are choosing to watch films at home, skipping the splurge on overpriced cola and popcorn. And that’s where a high-performance 4K projector starts to look like a rather sensible investment — bringing the big-screen experience home, on your own terms, and for the long haul.
The BenQ TK705i is pitched as a lifestyle projector that aims to deliver proper home cinema quality while being bright enough to hold its own in everyday living spaces—even with a fair bit of ambient light. On paper, it ticks quite a few boxes: a 3000 ANSI lumen LED light source, 4K UHD, and 98% coverage of the Rec. 709 colour space. It also comes packed with features designed to make setup as easy as pie.
Designed for real-world living
That said, not everything is quite as tidy. The projector ships with a rather hefty 250W power brick, which can be a bit of a nuisance when it comes to cable management. A minor quibble, perhaps, but worth noting. On the plus side, there’s an optional aluminium mini-stand that screws in easily and locks the projector securely in place.
Around the back, connectivity is refreshingly comprehensive. You get a power input, a 12V trigger, USB-C with DisplayPort Alt Mode (a rare and welcome addition), two HDMI 2.1 ports, a USB media port, and a 3.5mm audio output. It’s a well-rounded selection that should cover most setups without breaking a sweat.
The remote deserves a nod too. It feels sturdy in hand, with a sensible button layout, and— thankfully— it’s far more responsive than what we’ve seen on earlier BenQ smart projectors. Navigating the interface feels snappy and straightforward, which makes a real difference in day-to-day use.
Up front, tucked behind a cloth cover, sits the lens alongside sensors for auto-calibration features like autofocus and auto keystone correction. There’s also a 1.3x motorised optical zoom — something we’re rather pleased to see, as it makes setup far less fiddly compared to manual systems.
Smart features and everyday performance
Switch it on for the first time, and the TK705i walks you through a familiar setup process — Wi-Fi, Google account, and off you go. It runs on Google TV, and thankfully, BenQ has tidied things up compared to its earlier efforts. Everything — from apps to projector settings — is neatly integrated, so you’re not hopping between menus like a headless chicken.
Netflix? Sure, you can stream as many shows as you want.
Performance-wise, it’s a solid showing. The autofocus and auto keystone correction work quickly and accurately, getting the image aligned without much fuss. This adaptability is really what sets lifestyle projectors apart—they’re built to fit into your space, not the other way around.
The USB-C input with DisplayPort Alt Mode is a particularly clever touch. You can plug in devices like a Steam Deck, compatible laptops, or even some smartphones directly, with 4K output and up to 30W charging — all through a single cable. It’s a genuinely useful feature that adds a layer of versatility you don’t often see.
In terms of picture quality, colours appear natural and well-balanced, likely thanks to that factory calibration and strong Rec. 709 coverage. HDR formats including HDR10, HDR10+, and HLG are supported, and they do a commendable job of preserving detail in both highlights and shadows.
Black levels, as expected from a DLP projector, is good... decent enough to maintain a cinematic feel, especially once you’ve tweaked the brightness and contrast to taste.
Calibrated for fidelity, TK705i reproduces colours with exceptional accuracy and brings scenes to life just as filmmakers envisioned — rich, natural, and true to the original intent.
Advanced tone mapping and contrast enhancement elevates 4K HDR viewing, revealing details in both bright and dark scenes for truly cinematic experiences.
Gamers will find the input latency respectable at both 4K 60Hz and 1080p 60Hz, making it suitable for casual play. Just don’t expect competitive-grade responsiveness.
Audio, however, is where things are a bit underwhelming. The built-in speakers are serviceable at best—fine for light viewing, but if you’re serious about your entertainment, pairing it with a soundbar or a proper speaker setup is the way to go.
The call
All things considered, the BenQ TK705i is a cracking option if you’re after a lifestyle projector that balances performance with ease of use. The motorised zoom should really be standard at this point, and the USB-C input with DisplayPort Alt Mode is a thoughtful addition that genuinely expands its utility.
It’s not without its quirks—the bulky power brick and slightly plasticky build hold it back from feeling truly premium—but those are small potatoes in the grand scheme of things.
If you want a bright, flexible, and easy-to-set-up projector with strong colour accuracy and a few clever tricks up its sleeve, the TK705i is well worth a look.
