Buying a good monitor can be a wise investment. There is no single display that works for everyone, so it helps to ask two simple questions: How much are you willing to spend, and what will you primarily use the monitor for? What we were looking for here was a screen that handles everyday office work with ease, while also looking presentable enough for use at a reception desk.

Better contrast ratio

We have the Lenovo L24D-4C in for review (and frankly, all brands should consider simplifying monitor names). It comes with WLED backlighting, a 1920×1080 resolution, a 144Hz refresh rate and a 16:9 aspect ratio. From ergonomics and port selection to built-in speakers and that high refresh rate, it offers more than many office monitors we come across.

The monitor has a 23.8-inch screen (measured diagonally) with an FHD, or 1080p, resolution of 1,920 by 1,080 pixels. This is a typical configuration for an affordable display. At this size and resolution, the pixel density works out to 93ppi (pixels per inch), which is perfectly adequate for general use, though it may feel a touch low for pixel-precise photo editing.

The L24D-4C uses a capable panel with a rated contrast ratio of 1,500:1. That is noticeably better than most lower-priced IPS screens, which usually top out at 1,000:1. Colour coverage is rated at 99 per cent of the sRGB colour space, and viewing angles are listed at up to 178 degrees both vertically and horizontally.

There is also support for AMD FreeSync, which helps eliminate screen tearing, stuttering and input lag in games, along with VESA MediaSync for jitter-free video playback while watching films. The 144Hz refresh rate contributes to a smoother viewing experience overall, especially when compared to the 60Hz panels that dominate the budget segment.

For a productivity monitor, eye comfort matters. You are likely to spend long hours in front of the screen, and Lenovo’s TUV Low Blue Light (hardware-based) and TUV Rheinland Flicker-Free certifications are welcome additions. Whether you are working late or gaming occasionally, the monitor holds up well. While reviewing it, BenQ’s GW2486TC came to mind — another solid option, though it offers a slightly lower contrast ratio.

Ergonomic stand

Setting up the monitor is an area where Lenovo earns easy brownie points. The arm attaches to the base using three pins and a single screw, and you do not need any additional tools. A few turns of the screw are enough to secure it. The arm then clips onto the monitor itself, making installation — and uninstallation — quick and painless.

The stand supports tilt, swivel, pivot and height adjustment. You can even rotate the screen through 180 degrees, which is particularly useful for coders. The stand has enough weight to keep the monitor stable, even while rotating it.

Port selection is sensible rather than excessive. You get one USB-C port (USB 5Gbps, PD 3.0 with up to 75W power delivery, USB upstream), four USB-A ports, a video connector, one HDMI 1.4 port and another USB-C port (5Gbps with DisplayPort 1.2 Alt Mode HBR2). When we connected a laptop via USB-C for photo testing, it was a pleasant surprise to see the computer charging at the same time.

Make the call

The L24D-4C includes a pair of built-in 3W speakers. They produce decent sound for everyday use, though you should not expect anything approaching MacBook levels of audio quality.

At the back, Lenovo has placed physical buttons for navigating the on-screen display, including a mini joystick-style controller. This makes menu navigation far easier, and it is a feature more commonly found on pricier monitors.

Lenovo rates the panel’s brightness at 250 candelas per square metre. In use, it delivers a solid 1,500:1 contrast ratio and effectively covers the entire sRGB colour space. Images appear bright enough, colours look realistic, and there is good detail retention in both highlights and shadows.

With ergonomic features that are usually reserved for more expensive displays, a 144Hz refresh rate and a wide selection of ports, the L24D-4C stands out as one of the better general-purpose monitors you can buy in this category.
