In a city where heritage, culture, and modern ambition coexist seamlessly, hospitality is undergoing a transformation. Today’s travellers seek more than comfortable rooms and efficient service; they are looking for meaningful experiences, authentic connections, and memorable moments that stay with them long after their journey ends. At the centre of this evolving landscape is Kumar Shobhan, the newly appointed general manager of The Westin Kolkata Rajarhat and Fairfield by Marriott Kolkata.
With over two decades of experience in hospitality, Shobhan brings a leadership style shaped by operational excellence, emotional intelligence, and a deep understanding of people. His appointment places him in charge of two distinct Marriott properties that cater to different audiences whilst sharing a common goal: creating exceptional guest experiences.
As the city continues to strengthen its position as a destination for business, leisure, weddings, and MICE tourism, Shobhan believes the city is entering an exciting phase of growth. His vision extends beyond business performance and focuses on building hotels that are deeply connected to their guests, teams, and the city they call home.
A City Full of Opportunity
For Shobhan, Calcutta’s hospitality story is only beginning to realise its full potential. “Calcutta has always been an important city for both business and leisure travellers,” he says. “With improving infrastructure, stronger connectivity, a growing IT sector, and increasing opportunities for conventions and events, the city is becoming an even more attractive destination.”
The hospitality sector is seeing growth across multiple segments, from corporate travel and conferences to destination weddings and premium leisure experiences. This momentum creates opportunities for hotels to evolve beyond accommodation providers and become lifestyle destinations in their own right.
The dual role excites Shobhan because of the distinct identities of the two properties. The Westin Kolkata Rajarhat caters to luxury travellers, large weddings, global conferences, and premium business guests, whilst Fairfield by Marriott Kolkata serves the rapidly expanding mid-scale business and wedding market. Together, they allow him to engage with a wide range of travellers and experiences.
Storytellers for guests
When asked how he plans to bring Calcutta’s unique personality into the guest experience, Shobhan’s answer is simple: storytelling.
“We want to be storytellers for our guests.”
Calcutta is unlike any other Indian city. It is known for its intellectual curiosity, artistic spirit, literary legacy, culinary diversity, and emotional depth. Rather than creating a themed interpretation of Calcutta, Shobhan wants guests to discover the city’s essence organically through their experiences.
“The city is intellectually alive, creatively restless, and emotionally layered. I want guests to feel that complexity.”
This philosophy influences every aspect of the guest journey. Whether through local culinary influences, cultural experiences, or genuine conversations with associates, the objective is to create authentic connections that help travellers understand the city beyond its landmarks.
Power of Food and Experiences
Having started his career as a food and beverage associate, Shobhan understands the powerful role that dining plays in shaping hospitality experiences. Yet, he believes hospitality storytelling today extends beyond food alone.
“Food and beverage may represent a significant part of the story, but it is not the entire story,” he explains.
Guests may not remember every detail of a room, but they often remember a memorable meal, a meaningful conversation over breakfast, or a dessert that evokes a personal memory. Food creates emotional connections that linger long after a stay ends.
At the same time, modern hospitality has evolved significantly. Hotels today are judged not only by their restaurants, but by the complete guest experience. Design, wellness, service, convenience, and emotional engagement all contribute to how travellers perceive a property.
Understanding Today’s Traveller
Traveller expectations have changed dramatically in recent years, and Shobhan believes hotels must adapt accordingly.
He identifies three priorities that define modern guest behaviour: personalisation, informality and substance.
Today’s guests want experiences tailored to their preferences, but they do not want them to feel overly formal or scripted. They value flexibility, authenticity, and thoughtful attention to detail.
“We don’t want to tell guests what they should experience. We want to understand what they need.”
Increasingly, travellers appreciate meaningful gestures, intuitive service, and experiences that feel personal.
Energy before infrastructure
One of the most revealing aspects of Shobhan’s leadership philosophy is what he looks for when entering a property.
“I observe energy before infrastructure.”
Whilst operational reports and physical assets are important, Shobhan believes culture reveals far more about a hotel’s true health.
He watches how associates interact with one another and with guests. He observes whether employees appear confident and comfortable, whether interactions feel genuine, and whether the atmosphere feels natural.
“You can learn more by watching a lobby for 10 minutes than by reading reports for 10 hours.”
Operational challenges can be addressed through systems and processes, but culture requires consistent leadership and genuine commitment.
This belief shapes his approach to both properties. At The Westin Kolkata Rajarhat, wellness-inspired design elements such as greenery, calming textures, and sensory experiences create an atmosphere of relaxation. Fairfield by Marriott Kolkata, meanwhile, focuses on simplicity, warmth, and practical comfort.
Though each brand serves a different audience, both share a common objective: creating emotional connections that guests remember.
Building Strong Teams
Hospitality is a people-driven industry, and Shobhan places tremendous importance on employee engagement.
“People don’t stay motivated because of speeches. They stay motivated because they feel seen and heard.”
Creating motivated teams requires more than recognition programmes. Employees want fairness, transparency, respect, and opportunities to grow. They want leaders who listen and create environments where they feel valued.
Shobhan believes that involving team members in decision-making and maintaining open communication fosters a stronger sense of ownership and accountability.
The next generation of hospitality professionals is particularly focused on mentorship, learning opportunities, and purpose-driven work. By creating pathways for growth and development, he hopes to build teams that remain engaged and inspired.
Wellness as a Philosophy
Wellness has become one of the most significant trends in hospitality, and Shobhan believes it must be integrated into every aspect of the guest experience.
For The Westin brand, wellness already serves as a foundational principle through initiatives focused on eating well, sleeping well, and moving well. However, he believes wellness today encompasses much more.
“Wellness is evolving from a facility to a philosophy.”
By embedding wellness throughout the guest journey, hotels can deliver experiences that leave travellers feeling genuinely refreshed.
Sustainability with Purpose
Another key focus area for Shobhan is sustainability. As travellers become increasingly conscious of environmental responsibility, he believes hospitality brands must move beyond symbolic initiatives and implement meaningful changes.
“Sustainability has to move beyond token gestures.”
Several initiatives are already in place, including an in-house water bottling plant, EV charging stations, energy-efficient systems, and measures designed to reduce waste. Future plans include further reducing plastic usage, introducing electric vehicles into hotel operations, and investing in more energy-efficient technologies.
