Zee Music Bangla has recently unveiled a song from the upcoming action film Police. Titled Amra police, it is an inspirational song that celebrates the police force and promises to become an anthem for those who are entrusted with maintaining law and order in our state.

Sung in the familiar, full-throated voice of Bengal’s own rock star Rupam Islam, its potent lyrics convey the passion, dedication and commitment of an honest police officer. His emotive and intense voice undercuts the raw power of the lyrics, enabling the song to gain a soulful, stirring quality. The catchy, high-energy rock beats with which it opens suggest the song will give expression to a powerful personal narrative in a film with compelling themes.

Written by Raja Chanda, who has also directed the film, Amra police, which is perhaps the title song of Police, sums up the life of a lawkeeper, drawing attention to its hardships and hazards. The music video of the song is full of distressing visuals of brutal crime and violence, custodial interrogation and abuse, which are a part of the daily life of a policeman. Besides informing audiences what the film will be all about, the video also provides an impressive introduction of the main character.

Tota Roy Choudhury, who emerges from a police patrol car clad in uniform and wearing aviator shades, is introduced as a tough, no-nonsense cop who arrives on a mission to wipe out crime and corruption in a rural area. It is clear that he is an IPS officer who has built a good reputation and who can be depended on to bring lawbreakers to book. Perhaps a newcomer to the crime-ridden area, he is seen leading a team of senior officers on a special mission.

The video shows several confrontations with petty criminals and goons, but also hints clearly at a climactic clash with a powerful political leader, who is probably the main antagonist of the story. What is remarkable about Tota’s character is his hands-on style of operation, where he himself is seen taking part in every manhunt, chasing suspects or engaging in direct combat, setting his own life on the line in spite of having a team at his disposal. Yet the senior officer is also seen to acknowledge and respect his primary duty of protecting the law and upholding the dignity and sanctity of the uniform — a responsibility he proudly fulfils, and sets an example to his juniors.

Tota is cut out for the role of the police officer with his smart, chiselled looks and manly demeanour. He is fit and fearless, with his body language being appropriately aggressive. Articulating his determination through his eyes, he is depicted as a man who lets his work speak for itself. A believer in doing things himself and leading from the front, his character can deliver deadly knockout punches as easily as he can fit into the role of a loving husband, or even demonstrate the humorous side of his nature.

Through his character, the song enumerates the qualities a good policeman must possess — courage, idealism, focus and intelligence. Amra police, however, also expresses the flipside of being a policeman. Their life is one of sacrifice; though their jobs are devoted to upholding law and order and ensuring the safety of others, they embrace danger every day. They also compromise on family life and personal happiness, but are often criticised and accused of failure, corruption and incompetence.

Blood and gore, scenes of vandalism, crashes, explosions, gunfights, chases and physical combats with spectacular stunts indicate that the song belongs to a fast-paced, cop-and-criminal thriller loaded with crime, action and violence.
