Babloo — a name that drifts in like a familiar tune, warm with memory and soft with nostalgia. It’s the prankster cousin of childhood summers, the friend who lived just a shout away, the storyteller whose words danced like fireflies. We’ve all known a Babloo — and this song breathes life into that shared heartbeat, those quirks, that unmistakable charm.

It’s a tribute to identity, to music that wraps around you like an old melody yet feels new in every note, to memories that hum through every lane and para of Bengal. Sung by Sayan Chakraborty and Rohit Gupta, and shaped into vision by director Upahar Biswas, Babloo finds its rhythm in a playful blend of jazz and rock ’n’ roll. In its music video, a lively jazz bar comes alive. And just before Babloo steps out into the real world… the dream holds its breath, the music shimmers, and the story begins. A t2 chat with Upahar Biswas...

What’s the inspiration behind Babloo?

Who doesn’t have a Babloo in their lives? We have all grown up with one Babloo or another. This name is wrapped in emotion; it is a slice of our childhoods, a gust of nostalgia. Our Babloo is a bit of many things — part rebellious, part dreamy, forever dwelling in the realm of poetry and romance. The song was born out of this spirit during a jamming session with Rohit and Jhuppada.

Tell us about the characteristics of the sound.

Our Babloo is gullible, innocent, fun-loving — remember Jibone ki pabona? Soumitra Chatterjee’s rock ‘n’ roll hit from the 1960s film Teen Bhuboner Pare? Our sound hopes to capture the beat of that rock ‘n’ roll, the fun and vibrancy of that para boy spirit. The sound became a loving homage to early Bollywood and Bengali rock ‘n’ roll.

Tell us about the video story.

At Flash Forward Productions, storytelling is our heartbeat. With Babloo, we wanted more than just a music video — we wanted to bottle nostalgia. We dreamt of a jazz bar alive with Broadway-style chaos: the twist, the jive, the unrestrained laughter of another era. Before stepping into the real world, we built a storyboard — a blueprint of our para rock ’n’ roll colliding with the smoky elegance of a 1960s jazz den. Scarlet tones, wood-panelled walls, and polished floors became the canvas for a world both playful and timeless.

Who brought this vision alive?

To be honest, our vision was audacious—and we knew only love and friendship could carry it through. What you see on screen is not just production, it’s selfless collaboration. Shubbhodeep Ghhuha and Annmary Tom didn’t just play Babloo and Bobita — they breathed life into them, with innocence and charm that felt straight out of a bygone romance. Designer Abhishek Roy, with quiet elegance, crafted Babloo’s look for a defining sequence. Tushhar Bhala of Hind Lighting painted our world with light, far beyond what we had hoped for. And to truly travel back to the 1960s, Amrapali (hair), Kaju (make-up), and Madhav (styling) worked like magicians, making sure no detail slipped through.

The music had its heroes — Sabyasachi on bass and Rohit Gupta on vocals — flying in from different cities and countries just to make this dream real. Our schedule was punishing, an all-night shoot, but Jhuppada stood as the bridge, convincing every musician in the video to come aboard. When the floor filled with dancers, choreographed by Deven, a student of Shinjini Chowdhury’s Sweven, it felt like the 1960s had returned for one night only.

And finally, behind the stage, Tina Mukherjee from Alt and Beyond gave us the wings we needed, shaping our marketing and events with equal passion. In the end, Babloo wasn’t just a project — it was a family coming together to build something larger than any of us. Every frame is stitched with friendship, sacrifice, and love. That’s what makes it special.

What does Babloo mean to you as creators?

It’s a labour of love, stitched together with passion and the selfless support of our friends. For a young company like ours, the scale was ambitious — but that’s what makes Babloo so special.

How has the response been since the launch?

Overwhelming — in the best possible way. The video received an incredible response across platforms within days of release. We’ve been flooded with messages, reposts, and organic shout-outs from industry peers and audiences alike. Many viewers connected deeply with the nostalgia and storytelling — calling it “refreshingly retro” and “a Calcutta story with a universal heart.” The Babloo track has already started gaining traction on streaming platforms and social media reels, and it’s heartening to see people vibing with it just as we imagined.

How was the launch event?

We had a guest list of over 100 people from the film, television, and music industries — including actors, directors, musicians, stylists, and longtime collaborators. The evening felt like a reunion of Calcutta’s creative community — everyone came together to toast Babloo. There was music, laughter, and a lot of dancing — exactly how Babloo would’ve wanted it.
