Sandeep Sathi’s debut film, Shree Durga, is gearing up for its theatrical release on October 31. The trailer of the film suggests an intriguing mystery revolving around its female protagonist, Durga, played by Aparajita Adhya. The film follows her journey of transformation from an everyday woman unaware of her hidden strength to discovering her empowered self through intellect and physical strength. The release coincides with the celebration of Jagadhatri Puja, adding more meaning to the social statement of the film.
“Regardless of gender, everyone often finds themselves embodying the spirit of Durga in their lives, depending on the situation. Maa Durga represents more than just working efficiently with 10 arms; it’s about fortifying oneself with 10 weapons of protection. The film illustrates that when the moment calls for it, we must seize control with those 10 different weapons ready at hand,” said Aparajita. A t2 chat...
Tell us something about your character in Shree Durga.
My character in the film is a middle-class woman who once had a bonedi lifestyle but is now facing significant challenges. The house still remains as a place they can inhabit but not sell. This woman cares for her mother-in-law, navigates her husband’s illness, and manages the family’s rented out shops. Her greatest wish is to see her daughter grow up and do something good for both of them. Despite fulfilling all her responsibilities with a smile on her face, her mother-in-law often belittles her potential, insisting she lacks capability. She is someone who chooses to invest in her family instead of indulging in simple pleasures like a new sari. The film captures the journey of this woman who has lived an ordinary life but suddenly encounters an unexpected situation, which demands her response. The film is all about how she deals with this situation and reacts to it.
What appealed to you about your character in Shree Durga?
When I was first approached by Sandeep to be a part of this film, I hesitated. I was apprehensive about the darker themes explored within the story. However, he insisted that if I chose not to participate, the project would not move forward; they would pursue a different film altogether. Immersing myself in the character made me realise the significance of this narrative — not just for the theme of women’s empowerment it explores, but for how it explores human reactions when facing dire circumstances.
Often, we label actions as right or wrong, but in critical situations, those distinctions blur. When someone is pushed to their limit, survival instincts take precedence over morality. This is the heart of our story. While films centred around women’s empowerment serve to enlighten urban audiences, there remains a gap in awareness for those in rural areas... they’re slowly evolving, but there’s more progress to be made. We must continue creating these films, and I encourage viewers to watch this for themselves, rather than for me. The more we discuss these themes, the greater our chances of making a significant impact.
Your character is quite layered. How have you prepared for it?
Throughout my years of experience, I have honed my craft so that it comes naturally. The director played a crucial role in helping me embody my character authentically. Despite this being his debut film, I never sensed any hesitation in his vision. His ability to visualise scenes was impressive, allowing us to work smoothly without issues. He carefully planned each shot, ensuring we captured the intended emotion. Among the pivotal moments in the film is the interval scene, which holds great significance in the story.
What did you love exploring more?
The film features several fight sequences that posed quite a challenge. These weren’t choreographed or staged; instead, they were driven by instinct and natural reflex. For instance, if someone yanks my hair from behind, my normal reaction would be instinctively violent. It was that raw and instinctual. There are numerous scenes as such — many that I’ve never attempted in my 28-year career. However, the director’s vision was compelling enough to persuade me to take them on. While I’ve fought in various films before, there are some sequences here that I had never attempted before.
You always seem very intrigued to work with debut directors…
I believe debut filmmakers approach their work with a singular focus — to create something remarkable. It’s essential to remember that every renowned artiste began as a novice. I truly enjoy collaborating with first-time directors because their fresh perspectives inspire me.
