Dropped in the last weekend before the release of Nari Choritra Bejay Jotil, a song from it titled Shono go dokhino hawa is currently ruling the airwaves. Starring lead pair Ankush Hazra and Oindrila Sen, it is a purely romantic track which is high on emotion and passion and depict the duo as a young couple spending intimate moments during a beach holiday. Very modern in look and feel, the song recreates the well-known melody of a bygone era with a new, contemporary expression while retaining the folk essence of its original.

The contemporary reproduction of Shono go dokhino hawa reimagines in a modern design the classic hit from 1970 with lyrics by Meera Dev Burman and composed and sung by the legendary SD Burman. Music arranger Ishan Mitra’s version is like a tribute to the original and attempts to bridge the gap between the past and the present, besides attempting to make young listeners aware and appreciative of the music of a former era. The new song, which has a lush, orchestral arrangement and electronic music elements, maintains at the same time, the earthen sweetness of SD Burman’s folk melody.

Singer Durnibar Saha’s voice syncs well with Ankush’s character in the contemporary version; his deep, powerful tonal quality sounding apt for this intensely romantic number. The female voice by Somlata Acharyya Chowdhury is well-modulated to capture Oindrila’s mood beautifully, the passion in her voice just enough to make the romance in the air seem palpable.

Oindrila and Ankush share an electric chemistry in the video of Shono go dokhino hawa. The pair sizzles on screen but at the same time captures a soulful aesthetic. Popular among their fans as a real-life romantic couple, they look relaxed and confident in its many intimate moments and seem to be enjoying themselves playing lovers in this song sequence, which may be part of a dream. The song itself creates a dreamy, romantic mood, celebrating their love and expressing the mood of an intense love affair.

The video is replete with colourful scenes shot against beautiful sun-drenched beaches, blue skies and golden sands. Oindrila looks gorgeous in her flowing costumes, her charming and alluring looks in sharp contrast to her depiction in the film’s other promotional content as a no-frills, no-nonsense young woman, who has a mind of her own and is dismissive of Ankush’s character’s romantic advances. Ankush too looks very different from his earlier appearances as a naive, confused person. In Shono go dokhino hawa, he looks handsome and manly, impressing audiences as much with his fitness and his athletic body when he boldly riding the waves on a water-scooter, as with his ability to emote perfectly in the romantic and intimate frames. Some sleek and skillful cinematography enhances the romantic atmosphere of the song which has been shot in a vibrant and spectacular location, probably on one of Thailand’s many beaches.

A musical loaded with songs, most of them including Shono go dokhino hawa having a reference to hit numbers of an earlier era, Nari Choritra Bejay Jotil’s themes of romance and comedy, along with its superhit songs, is likely to propel this film into the blockbuster category. Directed by Sumit Sahil and also starring Sohag Sen, Sohini Sengupta and Ipsita Mukherjee in important roles, Nari Choritro Bejay Jotil, is now running in theatres.
