Fatigue and the bowlers’ inability to make optimum use of the Powerplay ruined Delhi Capitals’ prospects in the IPL 2020 final against Mumbai Indians, a disappointed Shreyas Iyer cited.
Speaking at the post-match media conference after losing the final by five wickets in Dubai on Tuesday, the Delhi skipper said: “It’s just the fatigue that crept in, may be. Bowlers just lost it in the Powerplay.”
With the bat too, Capitals didn’t get off to a great start, losing three for only 22 on the board inside four overs till the captain himself and Rishabh Pant stitched a 96-run stand to help them towards a somewhat respectable total.
Shreyas, though, has no regrets in the decision to bat first. “I thought it was a very good decision to bat first. When you reach the final, it’s very important to get off to a good start and that’s what we lacked in this game.
“We capitalised after the Powerplay and got to a decent total until the 15th over I guess, but after that, everything came down,” he said.
Shreyas heaped praise on the Capitals bowlers, especially Kagiso Rabada, who finished as the highest wicket-taker, and senior pro Ravichandran Ashwin.
“Our bowlers have been outstanding throughout. KG, getting the Purple Cap, set a great example for the rest of the bowlers in the team. Also Ashwin... He knows the strategies pretty well,” he said.
