Manipur BJP leader shot, 2 held

A BJP leader from Manipur, NKL Rameshwar, was gunned down at his residence in Thoubal district on Tuesday. A Thoubal police official told The Telegraph on Tuesday evening that they have arrested the two accused, including an RTI activist, in the case.

Rameshwar, in his fifties, was the convener of the state BJP’s ex-servicemen cell. Manipur has a BJP-led coalition government.

The police official said: “Two persons came to Rameshwar’s residence in an SUV. One of them stepped out and entered his residence and shot him from close range around 11.30 am before escaping in the SUV.” He added:

“We first managed to trace the car with the driver, who then revealed the identity of the person who pulled the trigger from close range. We arrested the main accused by evening. There was a personal dispute between the two. We are trying to ascertain the exact motive.”

Rameshwar was rushed to a hospital in Imphal, about 22km away, where he died. The arrested have been identified as Ayekpam Keshorjit, the RTI activist, and the SUV driver, N.R. Pointing.

Chief minister N. Biren Singh tweeted, “Deeply pained by the sudden demise of Ex-Servicemen, Shri NKL Rameshwar who was killed by armed assailants at his residence in Thoubal today. May his soul rest in eternal peace.”
