About 3.8 lakh candidates had appeared for the Class X exams conducted by the Board of Secondary Education Assam (SEBA) in February. Last year, the results were declared on May 15.

Assam education minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday said schools will remain closed and candidates will get their results online sitting at home. He said: “I request everyone not to hold celebrations, gatherings or take out procession with rank holders in public .… And nobody will go to schools (to ensure the safety of everyone from corona infection) because of the prevailing situation.”

The announcement of no-school-no-celebration is unprecedented, most here said.

Pintu Sharma, who teaches at Learners’ Educational Institutions in Tinsukia district, told The Telegraph that results are an occasion for both teachers and students to celebrate but the situation is different this time because of the pandemic.

SEBA chairman R.C. Jain said: “This is the new normal. Results will be available on 14 websites.”
