The Supreme Court on Friday restrained Chattisgarh police from arresting or “unduly harassing” former director general of police Mukesh Gupta who has accused the Bhupesh Baghel government of hounding him and his family, including tapping the phones of his two daughters.
The court ordered the state to stop “forthwith” the alleged phone tapping.
A bench of Justices Arun Mishra and Ravindra Bhat issued a notice to the government on Gupta’s allegation.
Former attorney general and senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi appeared for the Congress government while senior advocate Mahesh Jethmalani appeared for Gupta.
Jethmalani told the court the state was illegally intercepting the calls of Gupta and his two daughters in connection with the unnatural death of a woman family friend in 2001.
Rohatgi said he had no knowledge of the tapping charges but was willing to give an undertaking that “there shall be no phone tapping henceforth”.
The next hearing is on November 4.
