Seven people, including three children, were killed when the compound wall of a hospital collapsed here on Wednesday, police said.
The incident occurred in the Bowring and Lady Curzon Hospital, they added.
When the heavy rains, coupled with strong winds, battered the area, the seven victims were taking shelter near the wall, which suddenly came down crashing, police further said. All seven people were killed on the spot, they added.
According to police sources, the victims were street vendors, and included two children.
Police and emergency services personnel rushed to the spot with an earthmover to bring out the bodies from the debris with the help of residents.
Opposition BJP on Wednesday asked the Congress government in Karnataka to take responsibility for the hospital compound wall collapse incident, which killed seven people.
It also urged the government to provide treatment to the injured and compensation to the families of the deceased.
When the heavy rains, coupled with strong winds and hailstorms, battered the area, the seven victims were taking shelter near the wall, which suddenly came down crashing, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah earlier said after visiting the spot.
"I am deeply shocked to hear the news that eight people (actually seven) died in the Bowring Hospital compound collapse incident in Shivajinagar due to the heavy rains that lashed Bengaluru this evening. The fact that the old wall, which was not properly maintained collapsed due to the rain on the street vendors and those who had taken shelter to escape the rain has further increased the sadness. If this happened in the capital Bengaluru, what would happen to other places," state BJP president B Y Vijayendra asked in a post on 'X'.
"I demand that the state government, taking responsibility for this terrible tragedy, provide treatment to the injured, comfort and compensation to the families of the deceased," he said, urging the state government to be more vigilant and take all necessary precautions, including repairing the dilapidated structures, to prevent another tragedy due to the rains.
"Praying for eternal peace for those who died in the tragedy, I express my deepest condolences to all the families of the deceased, including the family members of the small children. Om Shanti," he added.
