The BJP on Saturday launched a fresh membership drive, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Varanasi and party president Amit Shah in Telangana.

The launch date was chosen to coincide with the birth anniversary of Syama Prasad Mookerjee, the founder of the Jana Sangh, the BJP’s predecessor.

Modi paid tribute to Mookerjee, describing him as a “bright nationalist thinker”, before travelling to Varanasi to launch the drive.

The BJP already claims to be the world’s largest party with 11 crore members and has now set a target of an increase of at least 20 per cent.
