Miniatures from southern India rarely get the attention reserved for those from the north.
The Great Mysore Bhagavata (Niyogi/The San Diego Museum of Art, Rs 3,500), with contributions by B.N. Goswamy, Caleb Simmons and Robert J. Del Bontà and carrying all 215 illustrations from the eponymous text, seeks to redress this imbalance. The book’s design is rather staid. But the reproductions of the miniatures bear evidence of the wondrous tradition of assimilating diverse styles, forms and ideas.
