OutRight is an international non-governmental organisation that works to combat the abuse, systemic violence, persecution, and discrimination faced by members of the LGBTQIA+ community around the world. On their website, they outline the huge positive impact that NFT project donations have had on the organisation, and how elemental this support is.
How have NFTs supported OutRight?
Several NFT projects have now included OutRight as a charity partner. Their second-largest crypto donation was from the project ‘Not Your Bro’, an empowered celebration of Women and LGBTQIA+ people who chose to give 2.5% of their sales to OutRight.
On OutRight’s website, the co-founder of ‘Not Your Bro’ explains this decision by saying, ‘As proud members of the LGBTQIA+ community, we know first-hand the daily struggles of living your truth. As gay women ourselves it would be an honour to support OutRight. It makes me so happy to have been able to make this donation. I love the work that you do. Our support of OutRight will be forever.’
This NFT donation is not a stand-alone event either. The NFT project Women Tribe has also partnered with OutRight for a longer-term relationship, while BitBaddies and Uncanny Unicorns are two more NFT projects which donated money in the past.
The charity has now been able to connect with NFT artists and collectors, enabling them to form a relationship and create artwork centred on acceptance and self-love, which go on to earn donations for OutRight.
Does this ethos expand into the wider crypto-sphere?
Despite being very dominated by men and known for its ‘crypto bros’, more crypto revolutionary spaces are opening out to promote progressive causes. An example of this is the UnicornDAO, created by Nadya Tolokonnikova, an online community with the aim of wealth redistribution. This project invests specifically in work by female, non-binary, and LGBTQIA+ artists. UnicornDAO hopes to even out the distribution of the $41 billion that was associated with NFT sales last year, between 95% and 85% of which went to male artists' projects.
There are also campaigns like the fuckhomophobia.eth, started in February 2022, which sends 100% of the funds in its wallet to organisations supporting the LGBTQIA+ community.
Also, Maricoin is a cryptocurrency made solely for the LGBTQIA+ community. Reclaiming the Spanish homophobic slur, its ethos is making a legitimate payment system that members of the community can use at LGBTQIA+ events. Once crypto finalises anonymous payments this coin could prove indispensable for young, closeted members of the community to attend events. Although there is still a lot of work to do before crypto is widely associated with these causes, coins and projects like the ones above are paving the way for a more inclusive future.
Which coins support NFT donations?
With Ethereum (ETH) anything you own can be used as NFTs, meaning that you can tokenise your art and earn royalties every time it’s resold. This is because NFTs can be powered by blockchains on the Ethereuem (ETH) blockchain. Therefore, artist creations and payments can be acted through Ethereum (ETH) and put towards a charity goal.
Similarly, the new presale coin Quitriam Finance (QTM) enables investors to ‘forge’ and ‘mine’ their own NFTs. This accessibility makes it possible for people to utilise the coin for a fund-raising goal. Quitriam Finance (QTM) is also in its presale, meaning that it's easier for investors to join at this early stage before the coin is launched.
