Understanding the Study Methodology for Geography

The essence of Geography lies in its tangible connection to the world around us. By observing and comprehending geographical phenomena, students can easily relate to and retain the subject matter. With the right approach and preparation strategy, Geography can become one of the highest-scoring subjects in the ICSE curriculum, significantly enhancing overall academic performance. "Besides this I also feel that the most important thing is that students must study the scope of the syllabus and cut off the portion which aren't mentioned in the same for the year 2024” added Ms Saha.

Insights into the Latest Paper Pattern

The latest ICSE Class 10 Geography paper pattern is structured to evaluate students comprehensively. Section A constitutes 30 compulsory marks, distributed across three distinct components. These include 10 marks dedicated to the toposheet, 10 marks for identifying locations on the India Map, and an additional 10 marks for Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) encompassing all chapters.

In Section B, students will have nine structured questions, from different chapters. However, they are required to attempt only five questions from this section. This flexibility allows students to strategically prioritise their preparation by selecting specific chapters for in-depth study. Despite the requirement to answer five questions, it is advisable for students to prepare for six for being more confident in the examination hall.

Mastering Map Pointing Techniques

Map pointing, a crucial aspect of Geography examinations, can be mastered through consistent practice and visualisation. To facilitate effective learning, students are encouraged to create visual aids such as maps, marked with essential geographical points, and display them prominently for regular reference. By familiarising themselves with these visuals, students can enhance their awareness and speed up their map-pointing process during examinations. “When it comes to map pointing students need to follow techniques to fetch higher marks. For instance they need to be very clear with their borders. They need to ensure that a river does not cut the mountains nor it touches the coast. They also need to be clear with their shading and arrowing techniques so as to provide clarity to the teacher checking the paper and get good marks” stated Ms Saha.

Allocating Time for Chapter-wise Study

To get good marks in Geography, students must devote sufficient time and attention to each chapter. A structured study approach is essential, with an estimated duration of one to two hours allocated to thoroughly understand and internalise the content of each chapter. “Stressing on the importance of the chapters I believe the important chapters for this year is:

  • Natural Vegetation,
  • Soil,
  • Mineral & energy resources,
  • Transport,
  • Climate &
  • Water resources

Apart from these, basic knowledge of other chapters like industry and agricultural portions is also important” said Ms Saha.

Self-Assessment Strategies for Exam Readiness

In preparation for the ICSE Geography examination, students are advised to engage in rigorous self-assessment activities. This includes solving specimen papers from the past five to six years, regular map practice sessions, adhering to a disciplined daily study schedule, and prioritising a deep understanding of the curriculum. During the examination, careful scrutiny of the question paper and thoughtful selection of responses are paramount. Additionally, dedicating the initial fifteen minutes to solving the toposheet can set a positive momentum for the rest of the examination.

Careful preparation, coupled with a calm and focused mindset, is essential for getting high marks in the ICSE Class 10 Geography examination. The Telegraph Online Edugraph hopes that these expert tips from Ms Sulagna Saha will be valuable as you sit for ICSE 2024. All the Best!
