Lena Dunham’s directorial venture Catherine Called Birdy is based on the 1994 Karen Cushman novel of the same name. The film which is set to make its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival this September is set in England during the year 1290 and follows Lady Catherine (Bella Ramsey), the youngest child of Lord Rollo (Fleabag and Sherlock star Andrew Scott) and Lady Aislinn (Billie Piper). As Catherine’s parents try fixing her up with wealthy suitors, Catherine scares them off with her cunning tactics.

“I am, thank the Lord, very cunning. Most girls are, though we’re not given due credit for it,” Ramsey’s Catherine is heard saying in the 2:19-minute trailer.

The medieval fantasy film also stars Lesley Sharp, Sophie Okonedo and actor Joe Alwyn (yes, Taylor Swift’s boyfriend). Dunham herself will reportedly appear in the film in a supporting role. The Girls star has directed and written the screenplay for the film and will produce it via her Good Thing Going Banner.
