Kolkata Thunderbolts meet Ahmedabad Defenders in the PVL final

History will be made on Sunday as the champions are crowned

Published 27.02.22, 12:14 AM

The Kolkata Thunderbolts, partnered by The Telegraph My Kolkata, made light work of the Calicut Heroes in the second semi-final of the RuPay Prime Volleyball League (PVL) on Friday. This means a date with destiny is up next, with the Ahmedabad Defenders the only obstacle between the Thunderbolts and the championship.

There is no doubt that Kolkata are playing their best volleyball heading into the final. Their dependence on Ashwal Rai has reduced and the likes of Vinit Kumar, Matthew August and Rahul Ramesh K have all come up clutch in the last two games to give Kolkata valuable points and momentum. The set-up play of Janshad U has gone under the radar, but just as in the semis, it will be vital to Kolkata's fortunes in the biggest game of them all. For coach Sunny Joseph, there is no need to tinker with what feels like a winning combination.

At the other end, the Defenders have been the team to beat all season. With just a single loss against their name and a convincing win in the round-robin stage against the Thunderbolts, Ahmedabad will start the final as slight favourites. Shon T John, arguably the player of the tournament so far, will have to be shackled by Kolkata while Angamuthu as Universal cannot be allowed to dictate the flow of the game.

After more than 20 days of exhilarating end-to-end action in the PVL, the last act of a thoroughly successful tournament promises to be a blockbuster. Will Ahmedabad maintain their supremacy and wrap up a deserved title or will Kolkata upstage the Defenders and bring the trophy home? The answer is just a few hours away.

Watch the clash live on Sony Ten 1, Sony Ten 2 (Malayalam), Sony Ten 3 (Hindi), Sony Ten 4 (Tamil and Telugu) or SonyLIV.
