‘Turds of Gold’ by Jugal Mody

Power, possibilities and poop (yes, poop) make for a witty political satire

Published 18.02.22, 07:17 AM

Jugal Mody’s new book is set on a premise that is completely absurd – which is exactly what lures the reader and has them hooked from the very first lines.

A freelance caregiver by profession, Nikunj starts building a reputation for himself when he realises that he possesses the unique ability to make anyone poop (yes, you read that right) and relieve them from all kinds of gastric problems. However, he finds his talents significantly challenged when he is hired to work for Kalpeshbhai – a billionaire who has not pooped in two decades. What makes this even more ironic is that Kalpeshbhai hails from a booming family business focused on making what is widely considered to be one of the best ayurvedic cures for constipation in the market. Yet, no tactics or medicine seems to free Kalpeshbhai of his plight, further intensifying his frustration – adding to the humour of the story, while leading readers to ponder over whether Kalpeshbhai’s problems might stem from more than just a mere physical ailment.

Published by HarperCollins India, Turds of Gold is a clever exploration of the vices of human nature and explores feelings like greed and jealousy, while drawing attention to its consequences. At the same time, the book is peppered with small miracles and hilarious moments, that lend to it a certain warmth. If you’re currently on the prowl for a light-hearted but thought-provoking read, you might want to get your hands on this book.
