The six nominees were picked for their “immersive” storytelling experience

Featuring authors from Sri Lanka, South Africa, America and Britain, this year’s Booker Prize shortlist has focused on picking global narratives that aim to explore the human condition, making them especially relevant as we continue to battle one of humankind’s biggest challenges in the form of the ongoing pandemic.

The Promise 
South African author Damon Galgut’s novel centres around a white family in South Africa during Apartheid, the narrative gliding across the perspectives of different characters.

The Fortune Men 
The only British author on the list, Nadifa Mohamed tells the story of a man who finds himself trapped by the legal proceedings of a crime he did not commit.

A Passage North
Unfolding against the backdrop of the Sri Lankan civil war, Anuk Arudpragasam’s book is a memorial for those who made it to the other side, and those who were lost along the way.

Bewilderment
Pulitzer Prize-winning author Richard Powers’s Bewilderment is about astrobiologist Theo Byrne, who must protect his son from the reality of this planet, all the while safeguarding his hopes for it.

Great Circle 
American writer Maggie Shipstead’s book is divided between two fiery women who are set decades apart,  yet united by one missing link. It’s a treat for the travel-deprived reader.

No One is Talking About This 
This witty and charming read from Patricia Lockwood explores a collision between the two parallel worlds we all cohabit these days —  online vs. the one that is not. Irreverent and bursting with life, this book is meant to be savoured slowly.
