A popular figure in Kannada theatre, Surendranath S.’ book Slices of the Moon Swept by the Wind details the knick-knacks of life in a small town tucked away in the state of Karnataka. Narrated from the perspective of a boy who is mentally and physically handicapped, the book is a moving account of how this child watches the many activities of the world around him from the window of his room. Be it a Muharram procession or birds perched on a windowsill or the local children who call him ‘monkey’, the boy’s detailed observations bring alive the place in the mind of the reader. Along with this outside world, he also weaves in descriptions of his family members and the life he leads at home. 

Despite the detailed observations and personal insights, the child’s own innocence shines through in the book, thereby making it a compelling read.
